HEAD BUILDING MAINTENANCE PERSON
Full-time, non-instructional civil service position.
Auburn, New York.
Starting salary: Minimum $50,163; pay commensurate with experience.
Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES is seeking an experienced, hands-on maintenance leader to plan, coordinate, and oversee the repair and upkeep of school buildings, grounds, and mechanical and electrical equipment. This position combines skilled building maintenance with day-to-day leadership of custodial and maintenance work, preventive maintenance planning, inspections, prioritization, and recordkeeping.
What You’ll Do:
- Plan and schedule preventive maintenance, routine repairs, and priority work across assigned buildings and equipment.
- Participate directly in repair and maintenance work as needed.
- Inspect buildings and grounds regularly to identify maintenance, safety, and operational needs.
- Maintain and repair heating and cooling systems and related electrical and mechanical equipment, including pumps, motors, seals, steam lines, and water lines.
- Perform or oversee painting, plumbing, roofing, carpentry, glass, metalwork, and construction of items such as partitions, stages, ramps, and bleachers.
- Estimate project costs; requisition tools, equipment, materials, and supplies in accordance with established procedures.
- Operate appropriate shop and power equipment and perform minor maintenance on electrical- and gasoline-powered equipment.
- Support snow removal and ice control operations and respond to urgent facility needs.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records and elevate difficult or costly problems with recommended solutions.
What You Bring:
- Thorough knowledge of building-maintenance practices, tools, and equipment.
- Good knowledge of standard construction practices and methods across the building trades.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and mechanical drawings and to follow oral and written directions.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and a physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
Minimum Qualifications:
Candidates must meet one of the following Cayuga County Civil Service pathways:
- Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State-registered two-year college with an associate degree in construction or engineering technology, plus two years of building repair and maintenance experience; or
- Four years of building repair and maintenance experience; or
- An equivalent combination of training and experience within the limits of the options above.
